LEGACY
People often assume legacy means repetition.
That if something is truly important, it should look the same generation after generation.
But that has never been my experience.
Shamrock, Clover, and Hooligan are all connected.
Shamrock and Clover share a father.
Clover and Hooligan share a mother.
Shamrock and Hooligan are maternal cousins.
The same family. The same enduring line.
And yet they could not be more different.
Shamrock was our legend, the old soul guardian who opened the door.
Clover is our healer and our strategist - always watching, always learning, always somehow three steps ahead of the rest of us.
And Hooligan… Hooligan is an unapologetic force of nature who experiences life with his entire being.
Three different souls.
Three different personalities.
Three entirely different ways of moving through the world - and perhaps that is legacy.
Not creating copies. Not replacing one with another.
But allowing something meaningful to endure while giving it permission to become something entirely its own.
Because legacy is not sameness.
Legacy is endurance.
It is wisdom carried forward.
It is healing carried forward.
It is joy carried forward.
Sometimes quietly.
Sometimes strategically.
And sometimes while attempting to eat a porch railing because you disagree with the existence of stairs.
The thread remains, even as the expression changes.
That is one of the greatest gifts these hounds have taught me. Nothing is ever truly repeated.
But love… love evolves, expands, and leaves traces of itself in those who come after.
And maybe that's the point.
Not to recreate what was.
But to honor it by allowing what comes next to become exactly who he or she was always meant to be.
